Abdal Hakim Murad (T.J. Winter) is a professor of Islamic studies at Cambridge University. A convert to Islam, he studied in Yemen and Egypt and has done original research into Ottoman Turkish religious culture. Although he has a wide range of interests- including modern feminist issues, his major focus is the spiritual life in Islam, in particular the school of Imam al Ghazali.
His aphorism “Some fish can only swim in deep water,” well depicts his intense immersion in the classical Islamic canon combined with a clear, witty manner of deliverance.
